Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University is located 6 kilometres away from Muang City on the highway leading to Udon Thani province. It was originally founded under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education as Sakon Nakhon Teachers’ Training School on July 17, 1964. The campus covers area of 16 rai (245 acres). In 1966 the school offered a program of higher education; students received a Certificate of Advanced Education which was equivalent to an Associate Degree. The school became Sakon Nakhon Teachers’ College in 1970. A Bachelor’s Degree of Education has been offered by the college since 1975. In 1995, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulayadej graciously conferred the name “Rajabhat Institute” to all Teachers’ Colleges. Consequently, Sakon Nakhon Teachers’ College was transformed into Rajabhat University on the day that His Majesty the King endorsed the bill of upgrading all Rajabhat Institutes to the state of Universities nationwide.
